The University of Notre Dame Australia has awarded Haziq Mohd Jahis and Jasman Lew the inaugural Shire of Christmas Island Scholarship, helping them to realise their career passion in health sciences.

The Shire of Christmas Island Scholarship is the only scholarship of its kind in Western Australia. Its aim is to assist a Year 12 student from the Christmas Island District High School who wishes to commence their undergraduate studies at Notre Dame’s Fremantle Campus.

The Scholarship considers students who have demonstrated academic drive and achievement during Year 12. Applicants are considered based on academic merit; personal qualities and motivation; personal circumstances or backgrounds which warrant special consideration; and financial need. The Scholarship can be used to support a student’s academic pursuits and/or residency whilst studying at Notre Dame.

Jasman is an active member of the Christmas Island Kung Fu Club Association, a volunteer group of people who perform the Chinese art of lion dancing, and displays exceptional leadership skills. Haziq is a junior soccer coach and worked as a pool lifeguard at the Christmas Island Recreation Centre whilst studying at school. Both students have enrolled in Notre Dame’s Foundation Year program.

Haziq and Jasman say the Scholarship has encouraged them to achieve their future goals. They hope the Scholarship can also help to make another Christmas Island student’s dreams come true.

“As the recipients of the Shire of Christmas Island Scholarship, we would like to thank not only the Christmas Island District High School but especially the Shire of Christmas Island as well as The University of Notre Dame Australia for this amazing and unique opportunity,” the Scholarship recipients said.

“We encourage our friends and fellow students who wish to seize this unique opportunity to apply for a scholarship at Notre Dame.”

Former Chief Executive Officer of the Shire of Christmas Island, Notre Dame PhD candidate and part-time Tutor at the University, Kelvin Matthews, said both Haziq and Jasman are worthy recipients of the award.

“Haziq and Jasman are outstanding individuals and their contribution to the Christmas Island District High School and the wider community is exemplary. I am delighted to see that this Scholarship will give both Haziq and Jasman the opportunity to access university education at Notre Dame and prepare them well for a career in health – wherever that may take them,” Mr Matthews said.

Jennifer Healey, Director of the Office of University Relations at Notre Dame, said: “Notre Dame is grateful to the Shire of Christmas Island for establishing this Scholarship to help students fulfil their career aspirations. We look forward to seeing the benefits this Scholarship brings in the coming years.”
