Interfaith day celebrates Abraham as a model of openness and solidarity

31 August 2017

Following a successful launch in 2016, The University of Notre Dame Australia will hold its second annual Abraham Day on the Fremantle Campus – a gathering to discuss the ongoing importance of Abraham for the Christian, Jewish and Islamic faiths.

Notre Dame will once again welcome Catholic Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB, Chief Rabbi Dovid Freilich OAM and Sheikh Muhammad Agherdien as keynote speakers for this free public event on Thursday 14 September 2017.

Reflecting on the theme of Abraham: Welcoming and Standing up for the Other, all three faith representatives will discuss the significance of Abraham for their own religious traditions and faith communities, and answer questions from guests about the discussion topic.

Drawing upon the wisdom and teaching of their respective cultures, each speaker will offer unique insights and reflections on the figure of Abraham as a model of openness, hospitality and generosity. Through their unique theological perspectives, the speakers will present Abraham as a model of faith and hope between the Christian, Jewish and Islamic faith communities.

The event will coincide with a three-week travelling exhibition the University is currently hosting entitled 'Courage to Care', an initiative of the Holocaust Institute of Western Australia, which encourages secondary school students to stand up for others in the face of injustice and persecution.

"By establishing an annual Abraham-centred day, we hope to be able to contribute, in some small way, to the fostering of solidarity and friendship between the Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities of Western Australia," Professor Celia Hammond, Notre Dame Vice Chancellor, said.
